Why I Created the Complete Novelist's Kit

When I first set out to pursue writing seriously, I imagined a world of endless creative freedom, where my ideas could flourish and my voice could shine. What I found instead was...frustrating.

In college, the courses I took on storytelling followed rigid structures, often treating creativity as a one-size-fits-all process. There was one way to tell a story. Deviate from it, and you were “doing it wrong.” I found myself questioning if my ideas were valid, or if they’d ever fit into the narrative mold being taught to me.

And then there was the writing market. So much of the advice and tools I encountered seemed geared toward pushing writers toward a singular style or voice. Everything I tried, from templates to software, felt like it was designed to churn out cookie-cutter stories or make me sound like someone else—someone I wasn’t.

What made things worse was this overwhelming sense that my own creative instincts weren’t being nurtured. I’d sit down with an idea, only to shut it down before it even had a chance to grow. The tools I relied on weren’t helping; they were stifling.

Discovering the Need for a New Approach

I realized what I needed wasn’t a rigid structure or formula—I needed a framework. Something flexible. Something that could spark ideas rather than suppress them. A tool that didn’t tell me my muddy, half-formed ideas weren’t good enough but encouraged me to explore them instead.

That’s when I started thinking about my muddy rock theory.

The Muddy Rock Theory

Here’s the idea: every creative thought your inner self brings you is like a muddy rock. It’s messy, imperfect, and maybe even unappealing at first glance. But when you accept that rock—despite the mud—and take the time to explore it, you might find something incredible underneath.

Maybe the rock is just a rock. But maybe, hidden under the mud, is a diamond or another gem of value. You don’t know until you take a closer look.

This theory became the cornerstone of my writing philosophy. It taught me that every idea, no matter how messy or unpolished, deserved attention. Accepting these “muddy rocks” also signaled to my inner creative self that it was safe to bring me more ideas—that I wouldn’t immediately reject them.

This mindset shift transformed my writing process. I started seeing progress, exploring unique ideas, and developing my voice in ways I hadn’t before.
